Cultural Practices
We start with high quality liners from the most reputable growers. Planting normally occurs during Fall through early Spring in fields that have been prepared during the previous Summer. Soil tests are taken to determine the pH and nutrient level. Soil is then amended, sub soiled then plowed. Rows are laid off with a ten foot spacing, spacing varies from 4' to 8' between plants depending on the type of tree or shrub. Pruning begins even before planting, roots and tops of bare root trees are pruned and root balls of container plants are evenly distributed. Liners are then planted in a heavy bodied fertile soil which affords a good root ball when dug.
Here at Merritt Brothers we place heavy emphasis on pruning and staking. We feel that this is the key to a superior product. Our tree maintenance crew prune our trees twice a year. Winter pruning to promote an evenly branched scaffold and a dominant main leader and Summer pruning to promote dense growth and to remove any damaged wood. Evergreen shrubs are trimmed periodically thorough the year.
Irrigation
Most of our production acreage is under drip irrigation which allows us to efficiently provide water and fertilizer to the root zone of the trees while not continually wetting the leaves which would promote disease. Overhead irrigation is used in our holding areas where trees are placed after digging. This reduces transpiration while new root growth is generated.
Trees and shrubs are top dressed with a blended fertilizer high in nitrogen with a substantial amount of potassium and phosphorus. This fertilizer also contains the micro nutrients that the plants need. We also boost plant growth throughout the spring and summer with fertigation through our irrigation systems.
![]() In order to provide our customers with a high quality product pesticides must be incorporated into our maintenance plan. We have a SC Certified Nurseryman and Licensed Commercial Pesticide Applicator on staff and all of our employees are trained to apply and work around pesticides. We value our environment and wildlife, pesticides are used only as needed as determined by scouting for insect and disease thresholds and weed pressures.
We have very experienced digging crews that understand the importance of a tight and centered root ball. Trunks are wrapped with a protective fabric and the tops are tied with a bio-degradable twine. Trees are taken to a central holding area where they are consolidated by the customers order. Overhead irrigation and constant monitoring assures that the order is in excellent condition at time of pick up.
We pride ourselves on carefully and securely loading our plant material. Nylon seat belt strapping is used to secure the top of the wire basket and tied in a way to be used as a lifting harness. Trees are placed on the trailer with the tops facing the rear so as to have less wind resistance. Root balls are tied together to prevent shifting. Protective fabric is used as needed between trees to prevent damage. Tree tops are then strapped down with a heavier nylon strapping and securely tarped with a woven tarp to prevent heat buildup.
